We have been learning about water quality and how it impacts on stream health. We surveyed two streams in the local area. One was in a forest and the other had recently had a slip run down it. We put out fish traps the night before but were not lucky enough to catch anything. Some of the tasks we completed were ar survey of the macro invertebrate populations, the speed of the water, water clarity and temperature, and the composition of the stream bed. We wer e supported by Rhianna from Landcare Trust and Zoe from Enviroschools.
Welcome to our class blog. We are an amazing class of learners who live in the Coolest Little Town on the West Coast. We would love it if you took the time to read and comment on our class blog.

A great day for Gardening
It was a sunny afternoon so we decided to make the most of the day and head out to the school garden. We fertilised plants, tuned the compost bins, weeded and tidied the garden shed and propagation tunnel. It was lovely to get a couple of hours in to make the place look spick and span again.
As we are an Enviro school we love learning in our environment. It is a chance to learn hands on tasks that we can use at home. Gardening is such a satisfying activity.

Crawl Fish Stream
On Tuesday we went on a class visit to Crawl Fish Stream. Our class was investigating the health of the water in this location. We tested many aspects of the waterway to establish its health. We looked at the temperature of the water, flow rates, invertebrate populations present and periphytons in the waterway. We measured the water flow in the stream, stream bed composition, and water depth. All of the aspects were considered before we could pass a judgement on the stream health. The class undertook this activities because we got a School Kit from Dairy NZ. We chose Crawl Fish Stream because it was within walking distance of the school so we can repeat our visit at different times of the year to monitor the health of the waterway. Our favourite activity was racing the orange downstream and timing it between two points to work out the flow rate of the water. There was an awful lot of maths involved in our investigation.

Science Roadshow
Our Year 5's were lucky to be able to attend the Science Roadshow. The show focussed on air pressure. One of the activities required our teacher to get into a bag and the air was removed to create a vacuum. She found it really hard to wiggle her fingers.
Around the room were lots of cool experiments related to how our bodies worked, friction, forces of nature, physics and chemistry. Have you ever been to a Science Roadshow? If so what did you like about it.

LEARNZ Virtual Field Trip
This week we have participated in a virtual field trip to the Kate Valley Landfill. We have a joined in Webinairs, watched videos and read diary entries. We have learnt so much from this. We have learn t about the gases in the landfill, compacted rubbish is easier to transport, we are more aware of the rubbish we produce. We have really enjoyed the experience.
